Poway reopened

My parents and grandparents are back home as of this morning. There's no real damage at their respective residences, other than tons of ash and some minor damage from high winds. The National Guard had been patrolling Poway yesterday to keep out looters, so all seems ok on that front, as well.

Here's another map that includes details of the homes known to be destroyed:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/firemap/

As you can see, the north Poway/RB area got slammed.

There's a fire burning about 10 miles from my parents' and grandparents' homes in San Diego. Apparently, the wind is raging and there's an evacuation alert.

If you're interested in following this, I've created a map of the fire area.

If, one day, you find yourself down in the south-eastern part of England and itching for some surf, ring my friend Dan in Broadstairs. Believe it or not, they have surf down there.

NYT reference search: Stain on an otherwise decent site

While I'm reading an article online, I highlight words and paragraphs and click randomly around the page.

I don't know why. It's weird.

I read the New York Times. A lot. Recently, they came up with a so-called feature that lets you highlight a word and double-click it to get a popup window with related reference information. So imagine a caffeinated random-clicker like me trying to read NYT -- more pop-ups than a GD porn site, and for stupid things like the word "the."

Apple's Genius Bar: Not so genius

I shall call him Screech.

So I took my MacBook Pro 1.83ghz over to the Apple Store today for the second time because it makes a high-pitched hissing noise when it's running on battery power. The problem is well-known among a good amount of MBP users and is very well documented by a guy named Daniel Jalkut.

After patiently waiting 45 minutes past my scheduled time at the Apple "Genius Bar", I was told by the "Genius" that "it's an emerging issue and we are continung to research it." T...

Customer service

Customer service is coming back into vogue. AOL hasn't gotten the memo apparently:

"An AOL service guy told me to stop complaining and learn to use a computer," she said. "Then he hung up."

Ahh, a classic example of blaming the user. If they really hope to compete with their new free business model, they're going to have to do a lot better than that.
